About Dr. Rohini Kanta Barua

Greatness is not defined by one singular trait, but by the rich tapestry of character, vision and resilience that impress others.

Dr. Rohini Kanta Barua, a versatile personality whose insights still continue to illuminate our path as a constant source of inspiration, was born in November, 1910 in Sadiya, Assam. After successfully completing M. Sc. and B.L. degree with gold medal, he cleared Civil Services Examination during the British rule. From 1935-1939, he practised law in Dibrugarh but left his lucrative practice and joined Cotton College as a lecturer of chemistry in 1939. In the year 1946 he left Cotton College for England to pursue his doctorate degree. After obtaining his coveted Ph. D in Biochemistry from Liverpool University, he decided to join Dibrugarh Medical College as Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 1946. He then accepted the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Gauhati University in 1960. He dedicated himself in building up human resources based on sound academic background and scientific temperament. Dr. Barua had to his credit twenty research publications, which were mostly published in foreign journals. As a scientist, Dr. Barua's major achievement lies in investigation into "Hydatic reaction on metabolism of the vertebrates when the digestive enzymes interact on Vitamin A and Vitamin B " which received international recognition. Besides this, Dr. Barua had contributed a significant number of articles under the pseudo name of "Lajkuriya" to the magazine "Awahon " along with his novels "Pamilir Poriyal” and "Bigyanar Galpa”. Unfortunately destiny put a halt to his promising career and his tireless efforts with his untimely demise on 7th July, 1968.

After his eternal rest, his heritage Chang Bungalow and the land was donated by his wife Late Muktalata Barua to the erstwhile Dibrugarh Law college which was thereafter renamed as Dr. Rohini Kanta Barua Law College. The R.K.B. family will always be indebted to him and try to emulate his ideals and footsteps.
